Notifiable Work Requirements for Plumbing & Heating Contractors

APHC would like to remind contractors of the key types of plumbing and heating work that must be notified under Building Regulations. Correct notification not only ensures compliance but also protects your customers and strengthens the professionalism of your business. Below is a clear overview to help you and your teams remain fully aligned with current regulatory expectations.

Why Notification Is Essential
If you are part of a recognised Competent Person Scheme, you are able to self-certify certain types of work that would otherwise require a building control inspection. Notifying work ensures that installations meet the required standards and it provides your customers with the official documentation needed for home sales, insurance and long-term safety records.

Gas Boiler Installations and Related Work
Any installation, replacement or modification of a gas boiler is notifiable. Engineers registered with the Gas Safe Register must notify gas boiler work, so the customer receives a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate. This includes new boiler installations, boiler swaps, re-siting of boilers and alterations to flue routes. Ensuring this paperwork is issued promptly is vital for both compliance and customer assurance.

Unvented Hot Water Cylinders (G3 Work)
Work involving unvented hot water cylinders remains a key area requiring notification. Under Regulation G3, the installation of an unvented system, or any significant modification to its safety devices or discharge arrangements, must be notified. Only contractors with the correct G3 qualification should carry out and self-certify these installations. Contractors should ensure notifications are completed through their relevant accrediting body’s portal or by engaging with local building control where required.

Bathroom Installations and Sanitary Work
Bathroom projects can vary greatly, but not all work requires notification. Notification is typically needed where installations involve changes to drainage systems, new soil or vent pipework or work in special locations that may overlap with electrical safety requirements under Part P. Like-for-like replacements generally fall outside notification rules unless drainage routes are altered.

Heating System Alterations and Controls
Changes to heating systems, including pipework alterations, radiator installations and updates to system controls may require notification where they impact energy efficiency measures or combustion appliance performance. Replacement heat sources, such as boilers or solid fuel appliances, remain notifiable under Building Regulations.

APHC encourages all contractors to ensure that notification processes are fully integrated into day-to-day operations.
