This month, WaterSafe proudly celebrates a decade of protecting the UK’s drinking water quality, marking ten years of dedication to public health and safe plumbing practices.
Established in 2013, WaterSafe was born from a collaboration between the existing approved contractor schemes, Water UK, and the Worshipful Company of Plumbers. With full backing from all the UK’s water companies, WaterSafe set out to create a national accreditation body to ensure high standards across the plumbing industry.
Over the past ten years, the scheme has evolved significantly. It has expanded to welcome a wider range of specialist contractors, including water supply pipe installers and reduced pressure zone (RPZ) valve testers. A notable milestone was Thames Water’s decision to close their independent approved contractor scheme, transitioning to the Water Industry Approved Plumbers’ Scheme (WIAPS), thereby streamlining standards across the region.
Recent research underscores the importance of WaterSafe’s mission. Alarmingly, almost 50% of plumbers surveyed in the past year reported that they routinely repair substandard work—either from unqualified installers or DIY attempts—on a daily basis. This statistic highlights the ongoing risks posed to water safety and reinforces the crucial role of using only WaterSafe-approved professionals.
WaterSafe’s nationwide reach is one of its greatest strengths. With contractors operating across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the scheme ensures that households and businesses anywhere in the UK can access trustworthy, qualified plumbing experts.
Looking ahead, WaterSafe aims to continue growing its network and promoting high standards in plumbing. APHC (Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors) members are reminded that they can join WaterSafe at no cost.
