The Tradesperson Shortage in the UK
A new study by Markel Direct, the specialist insurer of tradespeople, has revealed a growing shortage of skilled trades across the UK and how it’s forcing more homeowners to take on DIY repairs, often with costly results.
The survey of 1,187 UK homeowners showed that many struggle to hire reliable tradespeople. Nearly 50% reported difficulty finding availability, while 52% had been turned away by fully booked professionals. This shortage means household jobs are being delayed, abandoned, or attempted by homeowners themselves.
Why DIY Repairs Are Going Wrong
With tradespeople in short supply, 29% of homeowners admitted to trying DIY fixes, only to make the problem worse. What starts as an attempt to save money or time often leads to further damage and bigger repair bills.
Rob Rees, Divisional Director at Markel Direct, highlights the risk: “Whilst it’s essential for homeowners to possess basic DIY skills, knowing when to call in a professional tradesperson is equally crucial. As tempting as it may be to attempt a repair to save money or time, it can often result in higher costs and extended timelines. For peace of mind, hiring a qualified and insured tradesperson is the best course of action for more challenging tasks.”
The shortage is linked to a decline in the number of active trades businesses, deepening the UK trades skills gap. This downturn highlights why finding professional support for home repairs is becoming increasingly difficult. For urgent household issues, homeowners in some cities are waiting up to two weeks for help. These delays leave many homeowners struggling. In fact, 40% say the shortage affects their ability to maintain their homes, while 32% admit they’d leave a problem unresolved if they couldn’t fix it themselves.
The Cost of DIY Disasters
The study also found that failed DIY attempts come with a financial sting. Across the UK, the message is consistent: DIY may feel like a money-saver, but mistakes can end up costing more than calling a professional from the outset.
DIY or Call a Professional?
With long wait times, rising costs and fewer trades businesses, the shortage of tradespeople is a nationwide issue. While it’s valuable for homeowners to have some basic DIY skills, knowing when to call in a qualified and insured tradesperson is essential. Not only does it save time and stress, but it also ensures repairs are done safely and correctly the first time.
