Celebrating International Women’s Day by Championing Inclusivity
The plumbing and heating industry has long been dominated by men, with women making up a mere fraction of the workforce. Historically, women have made significant contributions to the sector, challenging societal norms and breaking barriers. However, in the UK, statistics from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) reveal that only about 2.4% of plumbers are women. This underrepresentation highlights the pressing need for a more inclusive environment that encourages and supports women pursuing careers in plumbing and heating.
Voices from the Field
To gain insight into the experiences of women in our industry today, we spoke with several professionals who shared their journeys and perspectives.
Gail Atkins from Enki Environmental Ltd shares her experience being on the tools.
“I have been working solo for two years now, carrying out legionella risk assessments, L8 monitoring, mains chlorinating, tank disinfecting and collecting water samples and putting them onto a data base to identify trends.
At first it was a little scary to attend site in a predominantly male run role, however, it got easier the more I did it and now I’m confident in what I do and enjoy it thoroughly.
My advice to any women in the industry is to be positive, be courageous, enjoy what you do and have a can-do attitude, and you will progress.”
Kate Nurden worked her way up from an Administration role to becoming the Director of MRB Heating Ltd.
“I started working for MRB Heating Ltd 7 years ago doing admin and payroll duties and within that time I have progressed to become a director of the company. It has had some challenges, but it was worth it knowing how quickly the plumbing industry is changing and renewables are coming in and how I wanted to be a part of that.
I look after our staff and enjoy getting to know the team. We have a very strong work ethic and are like a small family.
I am not afraid to ask if I do not know the answers to certain questions and I am happy to learn and use my knowledge to the best of my abilities, I found that was the best way to understand different systems.”
Damon Blakemore, owner of Blakemore Plumbing Heating Renewables told us how his Administration Manager has helped him transform his business.
“As a perfect example – this would have never been actioned if Gemma didn’t remind me that it needed doing!
Working on installations during the day, the last thing I wanted to do at the end of a busy day was come home and complete paperwork, send invoices or create quotes, so when Gemma joined Blakemore Plumbing Heating and Renewables last year as my Administration Manager, it was a God Send.
Now I focus on the job during the day, knowing that things behind the scenes are also being completed. I am more organised when arriving at jobs as the parts have been ordered well in advance and the customers are happier as they know what the installation entails. She has introduced new processes that help streamline my business and ultimately result in me having a better work life balance”.
Gemma Woodward, Administration Manager for Blakemore Plumbing Heating Renewables gave her perspective
“Having joined Blakemore Plumbing Heating Renewables just under a year ago, I have found the industry to be a fast-paced environment where the attention to detail and passion to be the best, is second to none.
I currently run the Administration side of the business and frankly I cannot begin to understand how engineers manage without an administration person to answer queries, book in work, order parts, ensure all the paperwork is correct for the installations and then install the Heat Pumps! I like being involved in an industry that is constantly striving to develop new technologies and improve existing systems, which benefits the customer”.
APHC Member, New Heat Solutions shared their appreciation for their team of women who keep the business ticking
“This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the incredible women who are at the heart of our operations: Gemma, Shaz, Jacqui, & Sharon.
These talented professionals wear many hats, excelling in roles that keep the business running smoothly. From conducting telephone consultations with clients and collating sales quotes for heat pump installations to ordering parts and materials, their attention to detail and dedication are unmatched. They also manage invoicing and accounts with precision, organise our engineers’ diaries, ensure all vehicles are road safe, and stay on top of MCS accreditations and installer guidelines to uphold the highest industry standards.
Their expertise and commitment not only drive our success but also inspire everyone around them”.
Allison, Office Manager at Hinckley Plumbing and Heating Services added
“I am in my 8th year as Office Manager at Hinckley Plumbing and Heating Services Ltd and thoroughly enjoy every day here, no two days are ever the same.
Women in the plumbing industry bring skill, innovation and a fresh perspective to a traditionally male-dominated field.
Their contributions help break stereotypes, improve workplace diversity, and inspire future generations to pursue careers in the trades”.
The Path Forward: Fostering Inclusivity
Addressing the gender disparity in the plumbing and heating industry requires a multifaceted approach:
- Educational Outreach: Introducing young girls to the sector through school programs and workshops can ignite interest and dispel myths about the profession.
- Mentorship Programs: Connecting aspiring female plumbers with experienced mentors provides guidance, support, and valuable industry insights.
- Workplace Policies: Implementing clear anti-discrimination policies and ensuring a respectful work environment are crucial steps toward inclusivity.
- Awareness Campaigns: Highlighting the successes of women in the industry through media and industry events can inspire others to pursue similar paths.
As we observe International Women’s Day, it is imperative to celebrate the contributions of women in plumbing. By fostering an inclusive environment, we pave the way for a more diverse and dynamic industry.
